The Daily Vinyl video #23: “Stagnation” by Genesis (w/ Peter Gabriel)
I am continuing to slowly migrate the videos not allowed on YouTube (due to copyright issues w/ Warner Media Group) to Vimeo. I’m so grateful to have found Vimeo.com.
I love this Genesis song from 1970. It’s a sit-back, relax, turn up the volume and be whisked away to a magical land. On April 18, 1972 in Rome, Peter Gabriel introduced the song this way: “This next one is from ‘Trespass’ and it tells of one man who’s left alive after the bomb PSHW!!! has fallen. This is very exciting, and it tells of how he plants his new crop of onions.” I don’t know what the heck he means, but there ya go.
Enjoy feeding the ducks next to a not Stagnant pond. The Daily Vinyl video #23: "Stagnation" by Genesis (w/ Peter Gabriel) from The Daily Vinyl on Vimeo. I believe this would be the first really obscure song on http://www.TheDailyVinyl.com. Back in 1970 (before Phil Collins joined the band), they were just five 20-year-olds exploring their 12-string guitars and early keyboards. Peter Gabriel was the lead singer and his voice is as strong as ever! “Stagnation” is the first song on Side 2 of their 2nd full-length album called “Trespass.” This album is magical. It has recently been remixed and released on CD w/ a 5-1 DVD mix. More magic. It was very tempting to go crazy with the special effects because this song has so many moods throughout. Sometimes just ducks being fed didn’t feel like enough. Although, as you will see, I used some tasty-full-ness. Oh, and don’t wait for a sing-along chorus. It’s not a pop song. Although the closing instrumental melody starting around 7:23 has been a mainstay in medleys (specifically “I Know What I Like”) even up ’til their reunion tour in 2007. Thanks to Shelby Bottoms Park in East Nashville for use of the duck pond. Original upload date: Aug 25, 2009
